It is still a beautiful journey. Since my first visit to Siena in the early 1990s, I’ve continue to develop a close relationship with the city. For ages, Siena has been described as a compelling city, and my initial encounters with her piqued my interest, which has remained a driving factor in my relationship with the exuberant but chameleon life that unfolds within her walls.
Many who grew up within her walls believe that it’s a mysterious way of life for those on the outside to understand, and while it’s easy to agree with that assumption, I hope to provide a different point of view based on my own experiences. Well mannered outsiders are not influenced by unwritten rules or cultural formalities; a lack of comprehension is not a barrier when assessing what may be viewed as a distinct social structure.
Even if I lived there for a thousand years, I would never be able to fully appreciate or comprehend all of her complexities. Whilst attending the Palio, I focus on being present as an excited guest displaying all the respect required to have a calm and fruitful day.
Twice a year, Siena hosts a unique event where you can practice and improve your creative arsenal and skills. You’re able to shoot night and day action. Portraits from dawn to dusk and a variety of behind-the-scenes. The notable build-up and tension leading up to the climactic ‘Corsa’. Everyday life in the midst of the feverish Palio is pure inspiration. Smiles, tears of love and anguish, sweat, belonging, silence and cries of life abound during the Palio. You will be catapulted into a frenzy of tremendous feelings. These are the emotions that I endeavour to make available to people who are deeply fascinated by its mechanism, as well as those who are interested or thinking of visiting it from all over the world.
We have the good fortune to be able to see all of this and express as many emotions as we can through our photos, which is certainly a privilege and means everything.
