Province of Arezzo
The province of Arezzo is in the east of Tuscany, bordered by the Apennines, and has an unspoiled environment and stunning cultivated landscape. The Casentino Valley is found in the north, surrounded by high hills and ancient woods. The Monte Falterona and Campigna National Parks, as well as the Casentino Forests, are located along the Tosco-Emiliano Apennines. These are found on the Northern Apennine crest, between Tuscany and Romagna, and are still home to deer, wild boar, wolves, and eagles. The Arno River headwaters, which flow to Firenze and Pisa, are found in this basket-shaped valley surrounded by mountains. A lush green land dotted with castles, Romanesque churches, and sanctuaries including Poppi, Romena, and Chitignano castles.
The Valdarno Natural Reserve is full of surprises; its distinctive terrain is characterised by the stunning Balze, yellow rock formations formed of layered clay, gravel, and sand that have sprung up in a variety of patterns.
The Val di Chiana environment is without a doubt an amazing succession of hills and valleys that are home to outstanding treasures of art, particularly Cortona, Lucignano, and Monte San Savino.
Churches, Castles and Historic Villages
Situated near the border of Tuscany, Marche and Umbria, the Valtiberina preserves an untouched environment otherwise dotted with castles, parish churches and historic villages such as Anghiari, Caprese Michelangelo and Sansepolcro, including the forests of the Pratomagno Range that conceal several locations which are, as yet, unexplored with numerous protected areas of local interest.
Arezzo itself is an extraordinary city of art renowned for its goldsmiths and antique traders. The old town monuments include the imposing Medici Fortress, the Cathedral, the Diocesan Museum and the Basilica of San Domenico. The Archaeological Museum showcases many valuable finds, which help recall the city’s influence during the Etruscan heydey, while the State Museum of Medieval and Modern Art provides an overview of the artistic production in the area from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
The sloping Piazza Grande – the focus of a vast monthly antiques fair – is one of Tuscany’s most photogenic squares. Overlooking the Piazza Grande is one of the finest Romanesque structures in Tuscany, the 12th century Pieve di Santa Maria, while the nearby church of San Domenico contains a superb crucifix by Cimabue. Piazza Grande is the heart of the city, surrounded by architecture from various periods in differing styles – among them the Medieval towers and the Renaissance style Loggiato Vasariano.
Petrarch, the renowned Italian poet, was born in Arezzo, as were artists such as Piero Della Francesca, Masaccio, Michelangelo, Luca Signorelli, Pietro da Cortona, and Vasari. They all left traces of their ingenuity and creativity in Arezzo and other adjacent cities. The Legend of the True Cross, one of the finest works of early Renaissance painting, is kept in the Church of Saint Francis. Other Della Francesca works can be seen in Monterchi, with the beautiful fresco of the Madonna del Parto, and Sansepolcro, where the Museo Civico houses four of the master’s most important works. The central Piazza di Torre Berta and the Cathedral are other must-sees in Sansepolcro.
The legendary Giostra del Saracino in Arezzo, the Giostra dell’Archidado in Cortona, the Palio dei Rioni in Castiglion Fiorentino, and the Palio della Balestra in Sansepolcro are just a few of the mediaeval festivities held in this area. The historical re-enactment of the Battle of Scannagallo in Foiano della Chiana is very noteworthy. The International Merletto Biennale in Sansepolcro and the Sagra della Porchetta (Suckling Pig Festival) in Monte San Savino stand out among the noteworthy events.
